red carpet rave, part I

I haven't really done much posting on red carpet action for a while, mainly because there hasn't been anything to get excited about - except for Tilda Swinton's Lanvin moment at the Oscars, kickass. But I was pleasantly surprised by some of the photos from the Costume Institute Gala, because while most of the guests appeared to have given the "Superheroes" theme the finger - or politely looked the other way - there were a few standouts that were theme-y, and for the lack of a better word, cool.

Anna Wintour
(above) was the best in Chanel Haute Couture; she did have that Storm thing going, though I don't think she needs to remind people that she is after all, the "Nuclear Wintour". Extra points if she's making fun of herself.

Naomi Watts
had a bit of a superhero siren thing going on, she looks like a fantasy from the thirties, with the power to fly and superhuman strength -

Rachel Bilson's Calvin Klein looks like an armoured wetsuit, but in a good, sci-fi chic way, kind of the Silver Surfer, though obviously not silver -

Caroline Trentini's Thierry Mugler is very black widow, very femme fatale, and I love that she's got makeup to match.

Amber Valleta has wings/built-in missiles on her shoulders; it's like looking at a supremely elegant and glamorous Transformer - any minute now and her dress is going to become a F-16 fighter jet.

Christina Ricci (wearing Givenchy Haute Couture) looks like a witchy Queen of Hearts type who poisons people and shoots tulle from her arms and binds/strangles her enemies.

So all in all, a very amusing experience viewing the photos.
